Maryland Nonprofits Releases New Standards for Excellence Code!

This is a must-have resource for nonprofits seeking best practices

I was proud today to help Maryland Nonprofits and the Standards for Excellence Institute® formally announce the new Standards for Excellence. In my very brief remarks as Chair of the National Standards for Excellence Council, I noted that as a national practitioner, I know people yearn for nonprofit best practices. The value of the Standards in that respect is profound. They provide clearly stated rules, in accessible language. They are not simply lore. They have been vetted by experts for accuracy and timeliness. Behind the Standards are resource packets that give nonprofits actionable templates to improve their organizations.

I also noted that the nonprofit sector is constantly changing. Someone recently quoted Lenin in this respect: "There are decades where nothing happens, and there are weeks where decades happen." A timely observation, indeed. We need to be agile as rule makers. We need to be flexible as rule makers. And at the same time, we need to stand by rules in the face of any who would come at them with a sledgehammer.

Finally, I noted that the sector needs collaboration now more than ever before. I am proud to stand among the hundreds of licensed Standards consultants, the replication partners who advance these Standards in different jurisdictions, and the many nonprofits that have undergone Standards certification.
